Take today's National Geographic quiz—Entertainment Is Green—written by yours truly!
People fish in the East River every day, just off Market Slip, near my apartment building. These days, they have some art to admire across the way.
(Thanks to Chuck for the amazing photos from the day.)
The crowd was LOVIN' it.
Why do I love this party so?
( These photos are courtesy of Naheed, photographer extraordinaire, and super VIP for the day as wife to the DJ.)
They say data is powerful (a major lesson taught at business school, I'm told), but sometimes you gotta wonder about the people who spend their time collecting it.
That said, I receive a daily media research newsletter to my inbox, and this was today's:
My pursuit of "business" primarily involves, right now, a growing interest in the developing world, and providing "trade," not "aid," to populations who can lift themselves out of poverty with proper training, good investment, and the belief from the developed world that women, minorities, and the poor are financially and socially viable.
That said, the following is one of the sexiest viral marketing campaigns I've ever seen for social entrepreneurship/small investment project in the developing world. It's called the Girl Effect, and at no surprise considering its sleekness, has the Nike Foundation behind it.
What do you think? I'm rather impressed, though I wish there was more to read about the campaign itself. Occasionally it's difficult to discern the legitimacy of these programs, but regardless of that, it is really cool to see access to this kind of social solution represented by mainstream marketing creatives.
(Thanks to Braiden for having this in her gChat away message for me to steal!)
My favorite party of the year's been reinstated—Warm Up at PS 1 in Long Island City—and I attended opening day yesterday as a guest of ilya's friend Dex, a DJ for the Detroit collective Underground Resistance. An amazing array of New Yorkers come out every year for this daytime dance party, people-watching extravaganza. Pics to come!
Also, for giggles, I really must re-direct to my favorite blog of the moment, Things Younger Than McCain. One of the newest entries: 5 out of the 9 U.S. Supreme Court Justices—although as the author points out, that means that FOUR of them are older than McCain. I'm really not sure which is more disturbing.
Food for thought, on this, the birthday weekend of our great country.
I am writing themed quizzes for National Geographic's environmental magazine, The Green Guide. The topics have ranged from the food crisis to the entertainment industry, and they'll keep coming, weekly, throughout the summer.
This week's is about Oceans. There's no byline, but there are a couple of silly answer choices that you might guess were invented by yours truly. Do you know what the Eastern Garbage Patch is? Or a nurdle? Or coral bleaching? If you have a few minutes, take this quiz and find out.
Happy 4th of July, friends!
A month from tomorrow, I'm moving to Chicago for business school. In preparation for the big event, I've so far done/am doing the following things:
* Received as a gift and perused a Not For Tourists: Chicago guidebook. (Who am I kidding? I will most definitely be a tourist when I arrive. Field Museum, Here. I. Come!)
* Looked at a map of the Chicago Transit Authority El trains at least once a week to marvel at the fact that there are multiple, different stations with the SAME NAME. (Riddle me that?)
* Taking a wretched Statistics class at Hunter College (alas, this bullet point warrants its own post because it is such an embarrassment to higher education. In fact, another post-bac recently leaned over to me in class and said, "You know, when this is all over, we're going to find out we've been 'Punked.'" ...ne'er a truer statement uttered.)
* Filling out forms (health), and forms (financial aid), and questionnaires (career leadership skills) for Kellogg. Was asked, for instance, to decide which of these statements most characterized my ideal job: "The position allows ample time to pursue other important aspects of my lifestyle (family, leisure activities, etc.)," OR, "The position offers consistent intellectual challenge." TOUGH ONE!
Another week begins, and I vow to be more diligent about this here blog. Happy end of June, all!
ah, you guys were there too? so much fun! we're having the first half of ira's birthday party there next... read more
